Lee's Grilled Cheeses

Lee's Grilled Cheeses

Another day another trip to Ft. Worth’s food truck park. I just can’t stay away from this place. What’s not to like about a food truck park with six different places to choose from in one location?

You may have heard of Lee’s Grilled Cheeses before if you spend time on the campus of University of North Texas in Denton, TX. This is where you will normally find Lee’s located. The beauty of a food truck is that it’s a restaurant on wheels and can move around. A few times a week you will find them in Fort Worth at the food truck park.

Just about everything on the menu sounded great so I could immediately tell that I was going to need help deciding what to order. The owners were both very friendly and happy to make a suggestion. I must have looked hungry because they suggested the Back Breaker. With a name like that I was immediately intrigued. “Tell me more” I replied. This sandwich has grilled bread, with sharp cheddar cheese, BBQ pulled pork and macaroni and cheese. No, that wasn’t a typo. It actually has Mac and cheese in the sandwich. I wasn’t sure how that would work or if it would make the bread soggy. Being a bit adventurous when it comes to food I went for it. I also ordered a side of chips which turned out to be a rather large bag of potato chips. There were more than enough chips for two people to share.

My food arrived about five minutes after I place my order. The pork was juicy and had a nice smoky and somewhat sweet taste. The cheddar cheese was rich but not overly sharp. I’m a cheese nut, so I wouldn’t have minded if there was more. Don’t get me wrong, there was plenty of cheese but it wasn’t overflowing. When I eat at a place that specializes in grilled cheese sandwiches I want it oozing all over the place!

What about the macaroni? I’m glad you asked. I would never have thought to add macaroni to a sandwich. Somehow all of these ingredients came together in the perfect combination! It was so good that I wouldn’t be surprised to see this catch on as a trend for all types of sandwiches. I can only hope that it does!

Update: I recently returned to Lee's to have another Back Breaker. Every time I come there are more people than the last. This time the line was very long on a Thursday afternoon. So long that it took an hour to get through the line and get my food. So you may not want to come here if you are in a rush. If you do have time to wait, the food is well worth it!

Expert Tip: Parking at the Food Truck Park has become an issue. You can no longer park on the side of the street opposite the park. Cars are being towed when they park there. Make sure to pay attention to the no parking signs. There is a business on the corner next to the Food Truck Park. You can park there without getting towed.
