If you live in a large city you have likely noticed the growing trend in Food Trucks. No, I am not referring to the roach mobile’s as they are affectionately know. I am referring to actual restaurants on wheels. They typically have high quality food with classically trained chefs. The prices are usually much cheaper than what you will find in a brick and mortar equivalent due to the low overhead. There are some drawbacks to food trucks though. Since they typically move around you have to know where to find them. They often have limited hours for lunch and dinner as well. There is nothing worse than when you have a craving for a great taco or burger and you drive to your favorite spot only to find the truck isn’t there! For Ft. Worth, there is now a solution to this problem.
Two weeks ago the first ever food truck park opened in Fort Worth. You won’t find it though unless you know how to get there. It is so hidden in fact, I almost missed it despite having an address plugged into my GPS! I did find it though nestled behind a Target building between some old warehouses. Parking is somewhat limited but I did not have a problem on the day I arrived.
I found six different food trucks lined up in two rows of three. There was plenty of outdoor seating situated between the two rows of Trucks. There is even a deck where live bands perform when it’s not too cold outside. Speaking of cold, it was very windy on this December day. I noticed that they had a few outdoor gas heaters set up. Unfortunately, the seats near them were already taken.
As I was approaching the trucks I was greeted by a cornucopia of wonderful aromas. First I smelled the hickory smoke from a BBQ truck. Then it was the familiar smell of burgers and fries. I knew it was going to be a hard decision choosing where to eat. It was like being in a mall food court. Only this park has high quality food and a lack of screaming kids or sticky floor
I was happy to spot the Good Karma Kitchen truck. Not that it was difficult with the bright yellow paint. They have only been open about a month, but I have already been hearing good things. They only serve vegetarian meals, with all ingredients being gluten free. The majority of the ingredients are organic as well.
For those that are familiar with my other reviews, you may be surprised to see me reviewing a vegetarian truck. To be honest, I was a little surprised too. After all, I am a big fan of red meat. Give me a steak and potatoes any day and I will be a happy guy! Just don’t tell that to the Megan and Christina, the owners of Good Karma Kitchen.
I arrived at the food truck park about ten minutes before they were ending lunch. Not realizing how strict the time policy is I spent several minutes chatting with one of the owners. When I went to place an order she had to check the clock. As she let me know, she couldn’t accept an order after 2pm. The hours vary by day, so check the website for the park before you head out. http://www.fwfoodpark.com/index.html Luckily, it was 1:59pm and my order was accepted. I went with the special of the day which was Nachos for $7. No overly cute or whimsical name as you might expect from a place like this. The special was simply: Nachos. At this point I must admit I was a tad nervous about my lunch. In my rush to get my order in before 2pm I didn’t have a chance to ask questions about what comes on these nachos. I was starting to panic and have visions of chips and a can of fake cheese. My order was ready in only a few minutes and my fears were quickly abated. I could see there were several ingredients on the nachos such as black beans and chives. The cheese was an organic Monterrey Jack. It also had a touch of a homemade jalapeno sauce. It was just enough to give a little hint of heat, but in now way was it overly spicy. In fact, my two year old son had a bite and loved it. My meal also included a small cup of pico de gallo.
Overall, the flavor of the nachos was great. They were cheesy and the chips were fresh and crisp. The thickness of the black beans almost made me forget that the dish did not have meat. The only drawback for me was that the portion was rather small. It left me hungry and wanting more food. Next time I will order something else to go with the nachos. In fairness, the portion was probably the perfect size. Unfortunately, like most Americans, I have become accustomed to the overly large portions you get at most restaurants. With Good Karma’s emphasis on health, it doesn’t surprise me that their portions are what you need but not what you want.
I will definitely be back. They have a pizza on their menu that sounds great. Plus you just can’t beat the atmosphere if you are looking for a hole in the wall to impress your friends with. Somewhere only you know. You better hurry though because I have a feeling this park won’t be a secret for long.
