Hotcakes. Flapjacks. Pancakes. Griddle cakes. Call them whatever you like. At State Fare Kitchen & Bar located at the Gateway Memorial City in Houston, Texas you’ll find a fun menu. State Fare Kitchen and Bar has carnival type foods with a gourmet flare to it. The purpose of our visit to State Fare Kitchen and Bar was the griddle cakes. My son loves them and for the most part orders them for breakfast wherever we go. I wanted to enjoy a nice brunch with him during his spring break. Naturally, he slept in and woke up hungry. Just your typical day lol.

We found parking inside the parking garage. This place is pretty popular and I knew parking out front would be difficult because of the reserved parking for valet so plan accordingly with your party when coming to State Fare Kitchen & Bar.

Right away you will notice a welcoming atmosphere. The energy walking in was upbeat. The restaurant itself is pleasant and inviting. I was a bit concerned about the service because there was a long wait and the place was packed. Many people were celebrating there.

I noticed a gender reveal gathering and a couple next to us on a blind date. Whatever the occasion this place will accommodate.

As we waited, I noticed the decor around us and enjoyed looking over the menu.

We waited for about 35 minutes and powered through the hunger pains. We ended up ordering the XXL buttermilk griddle cake, avocado and street corn on toast and the Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs. The XXL griddle cake lives up to its name. This thing overlaps the plate. I didn’t realize how big it was although I should have by the name. I highly enjoyed the griddle cake! It came hot with whipped butter and maple syrup. I am relieved that I didn’t order two. One of those was enough for three or more.

The Chicken fried steak and eggs came with a 3 oz chicken fried ribeye, 2 eggs any style skillet, hash brown cathead biscuits, whipped butter, and house jam. The ribeye itself was just okay. Would I order it again? No I wouldn’t, however it was still good but the size was disappointing. It was really thin. All the other sides that came with it was great!

Our avocado and street corn never came nor were we charged for it. This was good and sad because we were already stuffed. It was sad because we still wanted it lol.

Our waiter Emmanuel was super nice and very attentive. He brought us coffee to go and extra butter, syrup and house jam for our griddle cake. There are so many options to choose from and I look forward to going back to State Fare Kitchen and Bar.
