Spending a Sunday in Midtown Houston was effortless, who knew? Being a Houston native I forget how beautiful our city is. After catching a few films at the Houston Latino Film Festival, then stopping by for a pizza slice at Home Slice Pizza, we were in the mood for a drink. Daniel searches around and finds Winne’s Fancy Sandwiches and Cocktails down the street. It was so close that it was not enough time to walk off the pizza we just ate.

Main entrance.

Although we were surrounded by buildings, I was surprised there was a rather large outdoor seating area. We opted to sit outside at first, but the cold pushed its way for us to sit inside.

The nice waitress came by and took our orders. Daniel ordered a Hand Grenade Collins. I was undecided so the waitress recommended the Hemingway Frozen Daiquiri.

There is a very nice bar area with plenty of seating for the locals to enjoy their drinks while having a view of the local game on the TV.

Bar area

The bar looked like it was fully stocked for an drink choice you could possibly dream of having.

Daniel decided on pimento cheese with their house tortilla chips and the shrimp po-boy sandwich. The Hand Grenade Collins came out and I loved the green drink with the flamingo toothpick poking out from the piece of lemon. The menu’s description of the Hand Grenade says the Collins is made up of Vodka, Midori, Kiwi Pineapple, and Lemon. Daniel said it was an okay sweet drink but it wasn’t anything he would crave or order again.

Our drink choices of hand grenade and frozen daiquiri.

My drink was called Hemingway Frozen Daiquiri, it has House Rum Blend, Maraschino, Grapefruit, and Lime. It was a nice little drink that came with a fat straw, which with every sip I was getting a brain freeze. Although the drink was nice, I should’ve used a skinnier straw. It took me a while to finish it and stayed well chilled.

Now the food came out, the pimento cheese with the tortilla chips. Now this probably would have been my favorite because who does not love cheese and chips right? Well, this fell flat because it was not hot at all. I think the temperature of the food can make or break the meal. Unfortunately, I was disappointed in how room temperature the pimento cheese was. It probably was hot but was left waiting for our second order, the shrimp Po-boy.

Shrimp po-boy

The shrimp Po-boy was better because that was hot. The shrimp was crispy and the flavor was good. The bread was fresh along with the cabbage and tomatoes.

Winnie’s Famous Sandwiches and Cocktails is a great little hang out with friends and great conversation. The food is simple food to nosh on. It’s a nice hang out while out on the town.
