Tejas Taco House in Houston, TX brings back memories from my childhood of those great early morning breakfast tacos that my mother would make. There is nothing like waking up out of a deep sleep to the smell of chorizo being made by your mother or tia. That same great smell is what I noticed when I walked into Tejas Taco house on an early Saturday morning.

I approached the counter and was greeted by a young lady that spoke English and Spanish so ordering with my Spanglish was easy. Not being able to decide on tacos I ordered two Chorizo and egg, one Barbacoa and one Bacon and egg. Usually I can eat three tacos easily but ordered four this time because I caught a glance at the tortillas being used on my wait in line. I could tell by how thick the tortillas were that they may be worth my extra taco order.

The cook Adam was behind the counter cracking eggs in a cast iron pan and and making it look easy. As he fulfilled orders I noticed the bowl of what looked like Menudo on the side. I will need to try that another time for sure.

As I sat at the table I started looking at all the unique decor around the dining area.

I made a mental note of my favorite sign and made sure I got a picture.

My food was delivered to the table and I even captured a quick picture of the mother of woman who owns Tejas Taco House. She was super nice and some of the regulars were giving her praise on her beautiful blouse as they entered the restaurant minutes before the picture. When I looked at her all I saw was my tias of past years and she laughed just like one of them.

Time for this pile of tacos!! Did I over order? Doubt it.

First up the Barbacoa was so packed with meat that even before first bite the extra fell out the back. Don’t worry I scooped it up with the last part of the tortilla because I wanted every ounce. With cilantro and onions on it my morning was starting off great. The Barbacoa is tender and the amount of stickyness was perfect for the meat. I had lemonade with it but if I visit again I will stick with water because the flavor of the Barbacoa is something you want to keep.

Next up is Bacon and egg. Years ago there was a small taco stand in southwest Houston that first introduced me to bacon ends being used in tacos. Not many places have good bacon ends in the bacon and egg tacos but Tejas Taco House has these big chunks hidden like little treasure throughout the bacon an egg tacos. Impressed? Beyond happy as I eat this paired with the nice thick tortilla. I add a bit of the green salsa and the heat index for me is just right. Really good I could eat half a dozen please.

Now on to the wildcard of any taco establishment, the Chorizo and egg taco. So many restaurants make it so different but Tejas Taco House makes it the way I love it. My guess us that the chorizo is cooked well before even being blended heavily within the egg. This makes for the chorizo hold/lock in that flavor within it self. The taste is so much better this way. I had two and really tried to eat slower to enjoy the taste.

If I told you I loved the tacos it would be an understatement. Four tiny balls of foil with zero morsel of tacos left over says it all.

UPDATE 06/22/24: When you really like a place, you just have to share it with your friends. Recently, I had a craving for these tacos again, so early one Saturday morning, I called up my friend Servando and told him I had to take him there. He loved it too!
